CM Punk on Meeting Dana White, Divas Division, WM29 Attire & More

As noted earlier, CM Punk appeared on The MMA Hour. Here are some highlights.
If WWE is dropping the ball with women’s wrestling: “Are they looking at it like that [as a money maker]? Probably not. Should they be? Yeah probably, maybe. There’s a big difference between what I do and what the fighters do, I have had this discussion many many times, also there’s a lot of similarities. But yeah, the women are red hot right now. You’d think on the pro wrestling side to try and capitalize on that.”
If there was heat for him attending last Saturday’s UFC event: “No. Nobody really talks to me. [laughter] No, I don’t think it’s an issue. I just think that before it was hey let’s do this it’ll be fun it’s in Chicago and for whatever reason he couldn’t stop to it.”
What he discussed with UFC President Dana White: “Just the fights and he was happy that, we always discuss how I can never come out to one of these things [fights]. We just discussed that. He said he was happy that I was finally there and I said you might not be able to get rid of me now.”
If he’s getting paid to wear the Gracie sweatshirt he wore at Wrestlemania: “I just don’t have any other clean clothes. No, I just think people need to know I represent the family and jiu jitsu because I love it and people ask me all the time if I roll or that awful question: do you train bro? Yeah, this is what I do. I guess it’s just me and what I do and I’ve done it before with other friends, my friends that are in bands. I rep the T shirts, I rep them on TV. There’s a lot of eyes on Monday Night RAW every Monday or whatever. I like to expose people to maybe something I feel that they don’t have in their lives that they need in their lives.”

Eve Torres Teaching Gracie Women Empowered Program – Press Release

Former WWE Diva Eve Torres will be teaching the Gracie Women Empowered program to men and women of the U.S. Air Force this week. Here is the press release.
Team Minot Fights To Battle Sexual Assault
3/6/2013 – MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. — As part of an innovative initiative to reduce sexual assault across the Air Force, Team Minot has partnered with the Gracie Academy to certify 100 men and women of the U.S. Air Force in the Gracie Women Empowered program , April 15-19.
In 2012, the U.S. Air Force saw a 30 percent increase in sexual assault reports ranging from inappropriate touching to rape. There were 796 reports filed, compared to 614 reported in 2011.
“The goal for the Air Force is zero sexual assaults,” Col. Alex Mezynski, 5th Bomb Wing commander said. “Hopefully our Airmen can utilize this as another tool to protect themselves from sexual assaults and encourage others throughout our force to learn techniques to defend themselves as well.”
In an effort to bring awareness to the criminal act of sexual assaults, increase self confidence in potential victims and provide predator awareness strategies, the Gracie Jiu Jitsu family created the Gracie Women Empowered program.
While women make up a majority of sexual assault victims, the program is open to men as well in an 80/20 split to ensure the focus of the program targets those most prevalent to sexual assaults.
Rener Gracie has teamed up with World Wrestling Entertainment’s Eve Torres to teach a one-week intensive training program here.
Upon graduation, course participants will be certified to teach core principles and techniques to other men and women throughout the Air Force.
Capt. Tyrone Bess, a Jiu Jitsu instructor assigned to the 5th Security Forces Squadron, began thinking of innovative ways to assist in the sexual assault problem the Air Force has been facing. He pitched the idea to leadership here and was able to organize and procure funding for this initiative.
“The Gracie family understands the significance of eliminating sexual assaults in the military and has graciously offered to conduct a Women Empowered Instructor Certification seminar for 100 members,” Bess said. “As leaders in the Air Force, sexual assault is everyone’s problem and this is a way we can help eliminate this horrible crime in our Air Force.”
Women Empowered is a comprehensive self-defense program for women based on proven verbal, physical, and psychological self-defense strategies that have been developed and refined over nearly two decades.
The Gracie Academy instructors will be available for media interviews. If interested please contact Kiley Swopes, Minot Air Force Base Public Affairs, at 701-723-4673.

Chris Jericho Absent from Raw Event Last Night , Kaitlyn Talks WrestleMania, CM Punk Gets Weekend Off

- CM Punk is off this weekend's WWE live events so he can heal up in time for WrestleMania 29. Chris Jericho will be missing tonight's live event in Charlottesville, Virginia but will work tomorrow's show in Fairfax, VA.

- WWE Divas Champion Kaitlyn recently spoke with GO! Magazine about WrestleMania 29. She talked about looking forward to the big event:

"When it comes to Wrestlemania, I’m such a fan. Even though I’m part of it, I’m literally surprised and every single week — even when I’m watching from backstage — I can’t tear my eyes away from the show. Wrestlemania is our Super Bowl. So every show, as it gets closer and closer, something insane happens.

At these live events, it’s such a cool experience for us and for the fans because it’s not a TV thing. We’re not worried about camera angles or commercial breaks; we’re actually just there to interact with the fans. So, it’s a really cool experience and tensions are really high. You never really know what’s going to happen."

Maria Kanellis Returning to WWE?

It was reported in this week's issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Maria Kanellis, who appeared for WWE from 2004 to 2010, was among the former Divas contacted by organization officials to return. The possibility of a comeback, however, fell through when some unspecified female talent learned of WWE's interest in Kanellis, causing management to shelf the idea.

In 2011 and 2012, Kanellis hosted an online show for AfterBuzzTV.com discussing Raw events, which was most notable for her cryptic remarks regarding the personal lives of Kelly Kelly and The Bella Twins. Regarding the report and past remarks, she tweeted Thursday, "As for the other rumors: I have respect for all Divas including the Bellas and Barbie now. What's past is past. #oneloveonelifeladyfirst."

Beth Phoenix Talks About Retiring from WWE

Former WWE Diva Beth Phoenix was a guest on this week's edition of Monday Night Mayhem. Here are some highlights from the interview.

Why she believes that the time was right for her to retire from the WWE: "I entered a different season in my life. I'm 32. I started wrestling when I was 19 years old, and I spent my entire adult life on the road chasing this dream, and I loved it. I absolutely loved everything I did with WWE, and I had a wonderful career with them. It's time to check other things and experience other parts of life that you can't when you're 'married to the business,' and that's literally what you have to do to be successful. I did so much in the way of my dream, and I certainly left no stone unturned. To chase other dreams, I kind of had to make that really tough decision to move on to the next phase of my life."

Her favorite matches and favorite moment in her WWE career: "My favorite match would be a tie, with my match with Nattie (her last televised WWE match in her hometown of Buffalo on the September 28th edition of SmackDown) and my match with Candice at Unforgiven (2007), which was my first match for the WWE Divas Championship. My favorite moment would probably be my entrance in the Royal Rumble. It's no secret that I've been influenced by Chyna. Her moment in the Royal Rumble was groundbreaking, and to be able to be the next girl to do was mind-blowing. I don't think my heart was beating the whole time I was in the ring."

Her thoughts on the current state of women's wrestling and why she believes "right now is the best time to be a WWE Diva": "Wrestling goes through seasons. Some things become trends for a while or other things become a trend or the style. When women's wrestling got really hot, it was in a mature era where the girls could be more sexual and then be tough at the same time., so there was a lot of attention on it. It's hard to call attention to something when you don't have the same tools that you did. It takes a while to condition people to a different product, as opposed to what they're used to seeing. I think right now is the best time to be a Diva. What it is about is finding out what they don't and making yourself a commodity in that area. I think eventually you will see the standouts come to the forefront."

Whether or not she sees a possible WWE Hall of Fame induction becoming a reality for her some day:"I think there is a long, long line of ladies and gentlemen for that matter that needs to go in there long before I'm even on the radar. It would be amazing. Would I be thrilled and would it be the most amazing thank you anyone can get? It would be amazing, but it's not something I need in my life to feel like my career had ended or anything. I don't need to get that awesome recognition, because I had so many great moments while I was there."
