Maria Menounos Issues Statement on Negative Reaction from Hall of Fame Crowd

Maria Menounos issued the following letter regarding the negative crowd reaction she got while introducing Bob Backlund at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, as well as her full speech:

Dear fellow WWE fans and members of the wrestling press,

As you know, I had the honor of inducting my friend, Bob Backlund, into the WWE Hall of Fame. The fans were a little rough as another inductee and friend, Donald Trump, would likewise experience. It's understandable as we are not pro wrestlers and the honesty of the WWE fans is what makes it fun. However, I did the speech mainly to tell the world all the amazing things about Bob and I fear some of those things were not heard.

Below is my speech. I'm hoping you'll print it for a good friend, a great champion and one of the most incredible human beings I know.

Thanks and God Bless,
Maria Menounos

---

To induct anyone into the WWE Hall of Fame puts you in the company of the greatest artists, athletes and performers in the entire world. I CHALLENGE ANYONE who disagrees to show me another kind of entertainer who can recite monologues, in character, without the use of teleprompters and before world audiences, performing improv drama and comedy while flying through the air and taking bumps, 300 nights a year.

But for me tonight is even more special for I am not just inducting anyone into the WWE Hall of Fame. I'm inducting someone who encapsulates the word champion. Someone whom I'm a great fan of...Someone whom is my friend.

Growing up Greek and not speaking English, wrestling was one of the few things on TV I'd watch and be able to understand. I was five when Bob Backlund lost his title to the Sheik. I was fourteen when “Mr. Backlund” returned. I was eighteen when I met Bob in person and I remember being in awe. It was on the set of my first movie and Bob was literally the most positive and striking force I have ever encountered. He was funny when we needed laughter – the man has an incredible and underrated sense of comedic timing - strong when we needed support and sensitive when we needed a friend.

While Working on Bob's congressional campaign, a story came up about the Iron Shiek and his Persian Clubs. the Iron Shiek apparently had an exercise where he would swing these heavy wooden “Persian Clubs”behind his back. He had toured the nation's gyms with the clubs and, apparently, no other strong man in the country could perform the exercise, nor could anyone on the WWF roster – except Bob, who did it....on his FIRST TRY. When I asked Bob how, he told me 'when you believe you can do something...you can.' The very next day, bob said he was going to perform an exercise of his own-the harvard step test in front of city hall on his election day. Twenty years earlier bob set a personal record doing the step test for two straight hours. The goal was to match that. we all thought he was crazy as he was well into his 50's by that time. Bob was not able to match that record. He made a new one. It wasn't 3 hours. It wasn't four hours. He did his harvard step test for 8 hours straight!!! Once again reminding us all, if you believe you can do something, you can.

Speaking of Hollywood, one of the first days I was hosting the Today Show, John Cena and Vince McMahon happened to be guests. Of course, I'm huge fans of theirs, too, but I couldn't help but threaten John that Bob would one day come back to put him in the chicken wing! They both had great things to say about Bob but I'm sure they thought I was a little nuts, as people have thought Bob was a little nuts. But along with everything else Bob taught me, its okay to be a little nuts.

I'm sure people thought Bob was more than a little nuts, when after an unprecedented 5 year run with the title, he refused to turn heel. He believed it would let down his fans which included many troubled youth who had looked up to him and in those days, it would have. In so doing he surrendered millions of dollars from the new age of rock and wrestling as well as the career he loved most.

Not only did Bob Backlund hold the title for almost 6 consecutive years – he did something perhaps even greater when he came back a decade later. He completely reinvented himself and his character. When you think of performers who've been able to successfully reinvent their characters, even in Hollywood, few names come to mind. Bob not only created an entire new persona he also went on to become wrestling's number one heel and regained his title in one of the most successful comebacks in sports entertainment history.

But most people know that. Like the greatest champions Bob Backlund carries himself with humility – which is why many of the facts I'm about to reveal are not known.

In a Pennsylvania match against Hulk Hogan, whom he pinned on several occasions, Bob Backlund picked Hulk up over his head with one arm.

It's a feat Hulk, and his own late father, often reflected on in astonishment.

Bob Backlund has only been to the doctor twice since 1973

Bob Backlund has never done a drug. As he says and I quote “I wouldn't know what to do with them.”

Bob Backlund, within a three month span, won the NCAA wrestling championship and the National college football championship. He is perhaps the only man in history to hold that distinction.

In that championship football game, Bob Backlund recorded 22 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries. To give perspective, a team averages about 65 plays in an entire game.

Bob Backlund was a top shoot fighter if not THE top shoot fighter in the world of professional wrestling.

Bob Backlund intentionally NEVER squashed his opponents as he believed it would harm their future earnings.

Bob Backlund is in better condition than 99% of men...a third his age.

Bob Backlund has a diverse portfolio of stocks and real estate and has NEVER IN HIS LIFE PAID A DIME OF INTEREST!

Bob Backlund has a beautiful wife and daughter

And at the end of the day, Bob Backlund justs want to help others in need

Bob Backlund is simply one of, if not, THE greatest personal success stories for wrestlers, fans and people in general.

I know it wasn't always easy in your career, Bob. But, in the face of shortcomings and disappointments, you never gave up or succumbed like so many of us understandably would. Instead, you continued working out, educating yourself and, always, helping others and donating your time to charity. Through it all you kept your faith and your resolve and here you are on the greatest stage being honored by your greatest peers. I'm excited for tonight, your book being published and all the amazing things you remain to accomplish in your journey. And, I believe there's one more WWE run in that journey for you Bob, because 'When u believe you can do something, you can.'

Some know you as Bob Backlund. Others as Mr. Backlund. I just know you as my champion, my hero and my friend. Thank you to the WWE Universe for allowing me to welcome to the stage, Mr. Bob Backlund!

- After Raw went off the air Monday night, The Shield came out through the crowd and attacked John Cena. Sheamus and Ryback came out to even the odds, which setup the dark match main event.

- New York City DJ Peter Roseberg is hosting another WrestleMania weekend event - an "Inside The Squared Circle" discussion with former WWE Superstar MVP. The event will take place at Caroline's On Broadway in
Manhattan following the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony at Madison Square Garden.

Jim Ross Predicts WrestleMania 29 Will Do Over 1Million Pay-Per-View Buys

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has published a new blog on JrsBarBq.com. Here are some highlights.

WWE Axxess: My only appearance at AXXESS will be Saturday morning 8-10 at the Legends Booth.

Tonight's Raw: Hopefully, the broadcast starts off hot and engages the live audience early so as to sustain momentum and build upon it throughout the three hour broadcast.

Obviously, what ever closes the show needs to leave fans talking and create some "water cooler talk."

WWE's live event business: WWE has really been on a roll in recent weeks in their live event business with multiple shows selling out. I hear big plans are on the drawing board to make these live event experiences even more memorable which will start sometime after WrestleMania.

WrestleMania 29: I'm predicting that WM29 will be the most lucrative event ever produced by WWE from a live gate standpoint, I'm guessing the live gate will be approximately $12M, and over 1M PPV buys.

On
Arnold inducting Bruno: Just saw on Twitter that Arnold Schwarzenegger @Schwarzenegger will be inducting Bruno Sammartino at the WWE HOF inductions at Madison Square Garden on April 6 which is sold completely out. I couldn't get a ticket for a family member if I had too as this one of the hottest tickets ever. Great 'get' by WWE and a fitting inductor for the great @SammartinoBruno.

WWE Scouting: Gerald Brisco scouted the NCAA Wrestling Nationals over the weekend and has some intriguing prospects interested in WWE. We feel that next year will be a banner year with many of these recruits because several have another year of eligibility remaining. The last thing that we would do is encourage a kid to leave school and not finish their commitment to their team and to cease their efforts to earn a college degree. Plan B is imperative because most prospects will not make it as it has been demonstrated over the years. It's the same way in the NFL or on Broadway

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Induct Bruno Sammartino into the WWE Hall of Fame

WWE announced that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be inducting Bruno Sammartino into the WWE Hall of Fame on April 6th, 2013 at Madison Square Garden.

This will be the second Hall of Fame Schwarzenegger inducted Sammartino into. Schwarzenegger gave the speech inducting Sammartino into the International Sports Hall of Fame in conjunction with the Arnold Fitness Expo in
Columbus, OH earlier this month.

Arnold Schwarzenegger commented on the announcement, writing on Twitter, "Honored to be inducting my friend The Living Legend @SammartinoBruno into the @WWE Hall of Fame April 6"

Booker T Turning Heel After WM29, Big WM29 Entrance for Del Rio's Planned

- While we haven't seen Alberto Del Rio make his entrance in a fancy car in a few months now, word is that they have a grand entrance planned for him at WrestleMania 29. We've noted how Jack Swagger may be driving an 18-wheeler for his WrestleMania entrance.

- WWE officials have been discussing turning Booker T heel once WrestleMania 29 and the Hall of Fame are over.

Mark Henry Works Live Event Following Injury Report, Lita to Induct Trish Stratus?

- Mark Henry worked Sunday night's WWE live event in Baltimore, Maryland, so it appears the reported injury from Saturday's match against Kane wasn't that serious.

- 2013 WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus spoke with
Ministry of Slam Radio about a number of topics including who she wants to induct her:

"Funnily enough, before I done this interview, I put a poll on my website, asking who would my fans like to see induct me into the Hall of Fame. Lita won with a landslide, I would say, I can't disagree with that sentiment."

Chyna Teases Future Hall of Fame Induction

- Former WWE star Chyna noted on her Twitter that she recently spoke to Vince McMahon and induction into the WWE Hall of Fame is possible. Here's what she wrote:

"For everyone who keeps asking, No I'm not in love with @TripleH. He is married to @StephMcMahon."

"I moved on and so should people that have asked. I'm happy as a person and have a wonderful man by my side that I love."

"I am currently on good terms with @WWE and keeping it that way. I spoke to @VinceMcMahon and a #WWEHOF MIGHT be in the near future."

Steve Austin Talks About His HOF Induction & More

WWE Hall of Famer "Stone Cold" Steve Austin recentlyspoke with Adam Carolla. Here are some highlights from the interview.

How he got started in pro wrestling: "I grew up in a small town in south Texas. Changing channels on the television one day, probably seven years old, and came across Houston Wrestling. There was one light hanging over the arena, two guys fighting for a championship belt. This was back in the day when wrestling was real. This was before all the exposés and the 20/20's and all that stuff. So, wrestling was "real," and I was glued to the screen. Through my athletic stuff and football scholarships through college, once I got out of college I was driving a forklift for Watkins Motor Lines in Dallas, Texas, driving down to the Sportatorium watching the Von Erich's fight the Freebirds. Not in the forklift [laughter]. And a guy had a commercial on TV; teach you how to be a pro wrestler. I always knew in the back of my mind that I was going to be a pro wrestler. My first college major was a business major because I was going to sell insurance with my dad. I figured that'd be the logical thing to do. But man, it kicked the s*** out of me. I dropped it several times to a PE major. And after 17 hours to graduate, I decided nah, this ain't for me. I'm going to go into professional wrestling full time."

How hard life was when he first started wrestling:"We were driving from Nashville to Memphis and Memphis and back, about a 400 mile round trip, making 15 dollars to do that. So the two guys rode with me would just gas up my base model Hyundai Excel, which my brother had co-signed the note for me, payments were 154 bucks a month. I could barely make those damn payments. So guys were chasing me around, trying to collect my car. So times were rough, but that's part of paying the dues process. On Wednesdays we used to always get paid in Evansville, Indiana, and with the little s****y paychecks we were getting, we'd go down to the liquor store in Evansville to buy our beer before we headed home. This was back when it was okay to drink and drive, before everyone started screwing it up. So we'd cash our checks and we'd tell the guy behind the counter there, yeah these are just our trans checks for gas and horse****. But these were the checks we were living on."

When his big break came: "The big break came when I left USWA in Tennessee and went to Atlanta for substantially more money, but not a lot of money. And then a few years later, after I injured my arm, I went to ECW in Philadelphia with Paul Heyman. I started to learn how to cut a damn effective promo. Someone finally gave me a chance and put the microphone in front of my face. And a chance for me to unleash some of the stuff I had inside of me from being screwed over by WCW. WWE called me, picked me up, I went up there and they called me the Ringmaster. Well that sucked ass. I knew it. It wasn't giving me any kind of marquee value. Ain't too many people going to be buying t-shirts with the Ringmaster on it. So I came up with the Stone Cold Steve Austin gimmick, and I pitched that to the office. They started calling me Stone Cold Steve Austin unceremoniously. There was no build up, no hoopla, no bull****. And then one thing turned into another, I knew I was onto something. I just started turning the volume way up on the promo level. I turned the balance up inside the ring, giving out a very credible, believable product. People bought into it, with the storylines and the booking, and it turned into a real strong thing."

His favorite wrestlers: "Man, when you talk about your really good wrestlers, Shawn Michaels to me, is the greatest performer I have ever seen in the ring. Bret "the Hitman" Hart is the guy whose going to weave together storylines on different levels of psychology and execution, and he's just top notch. Ric Flair is my favorite pro wrestler of all time. So I think when you look pro wrestler up in a dictionary, you see the picture of Ric Flair."

Owen Hart: "I remember I was wrestling Undertaker that night in the main event. I was there. Didn't see it happen. I was in the back, hanging out, waiting for my time to go on. All of a sudden, we get word back that Owen fell, and we knew that he was going to do a gig hanging from the ceiling of the arena, and it was a hell of a fall. And all of a sudden, we get word that he isn't with us anymore. It was a real weird feeling. They said the show must go on, so the show must go on. We're out there tangling in the ring. It's strange, when people pay money to see something, I guess they want to see the end of the show. We're in the back and the boss says go on, so we go on."

His Hall of Fame induction: "I kind of was the head liner, but I can't remember everybody that went in with me. I know Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat was there, which was totally awesome. The Hall of Fame was a real neat deal because they played a little four or five minute package before I went up there. I think I had been so busy between the ropes and on the road, going down the road I never realized what I was doing. I knew I was hot. I knew I was drawing a lot of money. I knew we were selling tickets, but I was too close to the forest to see the trees. Finally at that moment, at the Hall of Fame deal, I really realized the impact I had on the business, and to the people that watched the business. So it was a real neat night at the office, but I cannot remember the entire class."

Beth Phoenix Talks About Retiring from WWE

Former WWE Diva Beth Phoenix was a guest on this week's edition of Monday Night Mayhem. Here are some highlights from the interview.

Why she believes that the time was right for her to retire from the WWE: "I entered a different season in my life. I'm 32. I started wrestling when I was 19 years old, and I spent my entire adult life on the road chasing this dream, and I loved it. I absolutely loved everything I did with WWE, and I had a wonderful career with them. It's time to check other things and experience other parts of life that you can't when you're 'married to the business,' and that's literally what you have to do to be successful. I did so much in the way of my dream, and I certainly left no stone unturned. To chase other dreams, I kind of had to make that really tough decision to move on to the next phase of my life."

Her favorite matches and favorite moment in her WWE career: "My favorite match would be a tie, with my match with Nattie (her last televised WWE match in her hometown of Buffalo on the September 28th edition of SmackDown) and my match with Candice at Unforgiven (2007), which was my first match for the WWE Divas Championship. My favorite moment would probably be my entrance in the Royal Rumble. It's no secret that I've been influenced by Chyna. Her moment in the Royal Rumble was groundbreaking, and to be able to be the next girl to do was mind-blowing. I don't think my heart was beating the whole time I was in the ring."

Her thoughts on the current state of women's wrestling and why she believes "right now is the best time to be a WWE Diva": "Wrestling goes through seasons. Some things become trends for a while or other things become a trend or the style. When women's wrestling got really hot, it was in a mature era where the girls could be more sexual and then be tough at the same time., so there was a lot of attention on it. It's hard to call attention to something when you don't have the same tools that you did. It takes a while to condition people to a different product, as opposed to what they're used to seeing. I think right now is the best time to be a Diva. What it is about is finding out what they don't and making yourself a commodity in that area. I think eventually you will see the standouts come to the forefront."

Whether or not she sees a possible WWE Hall of Fame induction becoming a reality for her some day:"I think there is a long, long line of ladies and gentlemen for that matter that needs to go in there long before I'm even on the radar. It would be amazing. Would I be thrilled and would it be the most amazing thank you anyone can get? It would be amazing, but it's not something I need in my life to feel like my career had ended or anything. I don't need to get that awesome recognition, because I had so many great moments while I was there."

Possible WM 29 Pre-show Title Match, Hall of Fame

- R-Truth vs. WWE United States Champion Antonio Cesaro may end up being one of the WrestleMania 29 pre-show matches.

- There was scheduled to be a WWE Hall of Fame announcement on Monday's RAW but it never happened. While there has been a push to induct Paul Bearer, it's believed that he was not the planned announcement.

- One WWE source described Vince McMahon as "very argumentative and contrary" right now. Vince has reportedly been constantly second-guessing other people's ideas and his own. The Royal Rumble buyrate may be contributing to Vince's bad attitude but the source described Vince as "a massive pain in the ass to work with right now."

It was also noted that WWE writers are working a very demanding schedule at the office and not only is Vince demanding constant changes, but it's said that Stephanie McMahon is "fanning the flames" by requesting that writers come up with more options for Vince to go over.
